Holdin’ Down That Darned Tarp
A Doer wrote:
Hi Red Elk,
Thanks for the pictures, I tried mailing you at <address> but for some reason it was returned. So I am delighted that you posted it at your blog.
I have a dome structure but haven’t figured out how to keep the wind from blowing the tarp cover off. We tucked it at the bottom, and have PVC clips, but these haven’t held.
What are you using to afix your tarp? It looks like you used PVC pipe and tree branches to build your dome.
Thanks,
On SkyDome that’s EXACTLY what I used. We too have winds. Rare to NOT here. What we do is Oversize the tarp, trench, tarp overlap to IN trench, the gravel the trench….then EARTH BERM up the sides a bit. Overlap a GOOD 2 feet on ground. Often 3 feet.
If yours is to be an Up and Down one (taken apart….We’ve overlapped by about 5 ft. and weighed with SAND BAGS…end to end. These types have stood up to an 82 mph wind. If REALLY worried…sand bag (wind side) with 2 …NXT to (not on top of) the first “set”.
I’ve used small BOULDERS and find these are not CLOSE ENOUGH together. Winds get UNDER tarp “here and there”…then “Blow OUT” the OTHER end! NO PROBLEM with sand bags. Think these are 40 lb. bags.
I find a LOW “Cockroach” dome is an EXCELLENT dome shape…LOW and LONG. Winds FLOW OVER this shape…”Regular” domes CATCH TOO MUCH WIND. (Go study a stream…SEE WHAT PEBBLES / STONES are GENTLY rolled over versus the more UPRIGHT cause “Eddies”….WATER is a GOOD “seeing” …WIND IS LIKE WATER)!
Yes, LOTS of “wasted” space towards the inside edges. BUT WE UTILIZE THIS with STORAGE there. NO wasted space then. We use PLASTIC CONTAINERS there. BEDs are next to those. LOW beds. Aho?
Our 30 footer now has a GIANT tarp. 60×100 ft. Will overlap the main dome / bathroom connection AND the Kitchen extension…ALL IN ONE PIECE…WITH overlap! Paid $479.00 for it and its FAR better a tarp then those most buy at stores. All WHITE. Now waiting (saving) for COMMERCIAL GRADE 7 in. WHITE-SIDED Insulation. $1400 (shipped). This to be our HOME. This structure to be lived in like any home. ALL YEAR USE. Snows there are 12 to 14 ft per winter. 5 ft in “bad” years.
The 3 mini domes here have had no problems in 4 1/2 snows. SNOW IS GREAT INSULATION!
I hope this info helps. CreatorGod bless.  re

The Next Project
Being Part of Him
I’d like to share with you the JOY one can derive from doing for others. As you scroll down and get into the SKYDOME pictures, KNOW the PLEASURE I’M FEELING doing this (and the other 2). Built to SHOW. Built to be SEEN. Built to (hopefully) INSPIRE….and ALL built VERY CHEAPLY.
ALL because our Creator has set me on the path to HELP OTHERS.
These 3 (more yet to be added…I THINK) are “The Village Of YESTERDAY AND TOMORROW”. Sky(s)Dome is made on the lines of a European “Gypsy BENDER”. VERY BIG. Seats 7…+ ! Sleeps 3 if needed. One Piece…including Bathroom and “Attic”. Very little here that I had to buy (thank you donators – I set aside a small amount of each donation to help pay for things needed on these). Almost ALL of WILLOWS (on all 3). FREE “Weed Trees” from local farmers wanting more pasture room. The Giant HAY TARPS are seconds and throwaways. ALL, FREE. Various things…FREE things…â€blow offs†found on roadsides, Etc.. I bought little.
My “Hobbit Hut / Gnome Home” (my first), built by digging into a FREE county dump truck of Ditch clean-out. THAT LOAD MADE A PLACE FOR 4! (2 adults, a baby and one small child). Built on an OJIBWA design.
#2…Adam’s Dome is of an APACHE Wickiup design. Sleeps 3 (in emergency).
I get GREAT PLEASURE at seeing my IMAGINATION turn to INVISIONING and from THAT, into REALITY. ALL because I’ve learned to FOLLOW Big Brother, Jesus, the Christ.
Now these tiny structures can be duplicated because they ARE…not something one just READS ABOUT. VISUAL FACTS.
These are made to show what our ANCESTORS used….Long Ago…and what will be used, AGAIN, in our not to distant future. Made from what can be SCROUNGED.
A teaching lesson for all.
Yes, it IS Good…to be a part of HIM. Aho?   re

MORE ON SKYDOME
GOT A DONATION TODAY! Went to Habitat for Humanity. BOUGHT A BIG (new) RUG! COVERS ALL GRAVEL (I’m concerned of) now!
New Skydome Pics!
SKYDOME UPDATE
ALOT of Doing on Sky’s dome today. MAJOR THINGS! The FLOOR!  Trenched alongside wall inside (already done so outside). Double Protection ! Then Tom (“Weeds”) and I pulled in a HUGE used Hay Tarp and, in ONE FELL “SWOOP”, covered ALL the floor. Bathroom included. All in one piece. THIS TOOK HOURS! Once in, we started putting gravel over it all. The tarp is the Water Vapor (ground) stopper AND DIRT COVER. The Gravel the Walk On FLOOR. (In time, if $$, will carpet that all. ‘Til then…Works. Aho?)
I DO have a SECTION of BEAUTIFUL Deep Nap carpet. Only covers a very small space tho. Got IT down / on too. Another Indoor-Outdoor carpet now covers the Bathroom now as well. Gravel below that, tarp below THAT. Bathroom now “done”…(will add stone on walls when time).
After all this we returned the furniture and placed again.
THIS PLACE LOOKS FANTASTIC!  AND just BARE ESSENTIALS inside. FANCYING UP will take time, so I don’t consider it done yet.
Still have to put the final tarp cover on (it blew off). Then cut the windows, a Smoke Hole at top and put windows in and smoke hole cover after all that.
I SEE THE “END OF THE TUNNEL BIG TIME, now.
Adam intends to fix his chimney this weekend…..completing THAT dome. So, 2 outta 3 “ready to go.”
“Weeds” has been a FANTASTIC HELPER. Help? No…HE DOES it ALL, as I basically sit and tell.
He’ll sure know how to do a dome (my way). And INTENDS TOO. HIS “cabin in the woods.” Will be a “piece of cake” for him now.
Again, STILL at $350.00 for ALL this.
Beat THAT! (  :     re
